From the Desk of the President

Usually in the summer, things tend to slow down a bit, but not the LWV Hays County.  We have a new board that is working hard on various projects for the coming year. We encourage our members to mark their calendars and get involved.  Here are some highlights:

Meet Your New League of Women Voters Hays County Officers and Board

Our new officers and board were voted into office at our Annual Meeting in May.  They are:

Laurie ODonnell – President
Linda Calvert – Past President and Co-VP for Programs and Advocacy
Heather Harrington – Co-VP for Programs and Advocacy
Carole Belver – Secretary
Marla Koosed – Treasurer
Delysia Moore – VP for Voter Services
Andrea MacRae – VP for Membership
Directors-at-Large: Jayne Baker, Shannon Fitzpatrick, Margaret Lindsey, Fay Gillham, Mary Helen Frazier, and Linda Parrish

The officers and board will continue to meet throughout the summer to plan training and events for our members.

Let’s Get Our Town Teams Organized and Working!

As mentioned at the Annual Meeting, one of our goals for the year is to develop Town Teams in various areas of the county.  Our aim is to empower members to address issues and interests unique to their own communities, ensuring that every town’s voice is heard and represented.

There are three meetings planned for this month – one for San Marcos, one for Wimberley, and one for Kyle/Buda.  We already have an active group in the Dripping Springs/Austin area, so they will continue with their regular monthly schedule meeting at The Cultural Hub on the third Monday of the month at 2:30 PM.

The initial Town Team meetings will all be held on Zoom.  During the meetings we hope to discuss what is important to each group, what they would like to work on, and devise a meeting schedule.  Mark your calendars and plan to get involved.

John Lewis Day of Action – July 1

The national League of Women Voters has encouraged League members to get out on this day and work for democracy.  Step Up San Marcos will be hosting a peaceful march on Thursday, July 17 beginning at 4:00 PM in the downtown square.  People are encouraged to come out and march for human rights, civil liberties, and defending democracy in our country.  Register at:  mobilize.us/john-lewis-actions/event/811941

Fundraising Meeting – July 28

When Marla presented the budget at our Annual Meeting in May, she stressed that we had a hole in our finances for the year since we did not have a fundraiser last year.  It is important that we start the planning now for a fundraising event.  We have a meeting scheduled for anyone who is interested in identifying a fundraiser and helping to plan it.  The meeting will be held Monday, July 28 at 6:00 PM at the San Marcos Library in Conference room 128.  Mark your calendar and plan to come be a part of this process.  If we choose to hold a Wine Tasting, we have detailed plans and directions from the previous committee ready to be implemented.

Programs and Advocacy Committee

Be on the lookout for some very informative programs coming to our county.   The committee has been working on the LWVUS Unite and Rise 8.5 initiative and discussing a social media campaign to get everyone involved.

LWV Hays County Fall Social

Plans are in the works for our Fall Social to be held on Thursday, September 18 beginning at 6:00 PM.  It will be a potluck event to be held at the Kyle Methodist Church.  Watch for more information to come.
